A Conversation with Nanushka

March 8, 2022

Nanushka, based in Budapest, was founded in 2006 by Sandra Sandor as a womenswear label that has since expanded to menswear. From the beginning, she has applied the Bauhaus notion of “form follows function” – the theme of her final project at London Fashion College – to a wardrobe that spans youthful freshness and polished ease. With emphasis on fabric and craftmanship, the collections stand out for their “Bohemian Modernist” perspective and are underpinned by a conscious approach from sourcing lower-impact materials to engaging the community at large.

What would you like us to know about this collection?
Our Fall-Winter 22 collection is one of our favourites to date. It sums up everything we stand for as a house: a sense of innovation, craft, functionalism and raw beauty.

Are you a dreamer?
Unfortunately not at the moment. We have a 5-month-old son, so dreams – and sleep — are a little hard to come by.

Why do you think people dream of working in fashion?
Fashion is a way of communicating that can directly connect you to people from all backgrounds —  age, where you live, how you live — it doesn’t matter. It is about a shared perspective that often goes unspoken. That is something that never stops being exciting.

To what extent do you think fashion is about proposing/selling dreams?
It is certainly about proposing dreams, but it is also about how they translate into a reality. Fashion has parameters; for the way I design, with both beauty and functionality at the core, combining dreams and reality is really important.

Do dreams help us make sense of reality or do they help us escape?
Dreams do both: they help us to escape the confined ideas that people have about what we can achieve, which can subsequently [help] turn those ideas into reality.

What is one dream you would like to achieve this coming year?
Getting some more sleep…  and some more dreams.
