Dan Sablon had been honing his aesthetic and collaborating with creative talents across the industry for several years before assuming the role of Senior Fashion Editor at i-D last October. Born in Paris where he is based today, the brand consultant and curator worked alongside Marc Jacobs, joined Rihanna’s studio team at Fenty, and continues to assist emerging brands such as Meryll Rogge, Minuit, Drôle de Monsieur and Xuly.Bët through his range of design and strategic expertise. Esteemed by his peers with a presence outside the spotlight, Sablon’s profile is now gaining ever wider recognition beyond fashion’s inner circle.

To what extent do you think fashion is about proposing/selling dreams? How might this have this have a positive effect on people?
I feel people are still very much galvanised and excited when it comes to fashion: the escape from a mundane reality, the novelties and show effects. The difference now is that information travels way faster and it is easier for people to be more critical and informed – which is a great thing if it leads people to participate and make their own opinions!

What do the dreams that emerge through fashion/creation tell us about our reality?
Fashion is a societal magnifier of a moment. It translates the dreams, hopes and fears of people at any one point in time.

What is one trend or item of clothing that will define the coming year?
Anything practical for any specific purpose.

How does the work you produce reflect your dreams of fashion?
Fashion has always been a means of expression for me. It has shaped my knowledge and curiosity extending to the realms of art, music, subculture, history… I hope that the imagery I help create can spark the same in people. It should be understandable, subliminal, and timeless.
