Graduated from London’s Central Saint Martins, Benjamin Benmoyal trained at Alexander McQueen and Hermès ateliers. He then founded his eponymous brand in 2020. Eco-responsibility and experimentation are the core of his work as he creates an unique fabric woven from VHS and audio tapes. Inspired by his origins, he reinterprets the volumes and drapes of traditional Moroccan outfits. Benjamin Benmoyal joined SPHERE Paris Fashion Week Showroom in March 2021.
How would you describe your Fall/Winter 2021 collection?
I would say my work became more mature. This collection is also more versatile, it’s a mix of very wearable and experimental pieces.
I went deeper with my research about Moroccan culture from the 30’s, their use of draping and traditional outfits. The long, relaxed and oversized fit of the garments as well as the colourful stripes and drapes are like an invitation to chill in a Moroccan lounge of a riad in Marrakech.
What is the look or the piece that reflects the spirit of the season?
The look 22 ! It’s composed of a long, oversized coat with colourful fringes, a wool Trousers with long ropes, pompons and a silk shirt with Moroccan metal buttons.
This look illustrates the spirit of this collection because besides the obvious northern Africa inspirations, I used other fabrics than my usual woven cassette tapes ones. The colorful striped part is woven out of upcycled yarns from different textile companies’ deadstock. I sourced the wool and the silk fabrics from LVMH maisons’ deadstock. It’s like a new chapter in my work, I still continue to make garments with my cassette tapes fabrics but also start exploring new ways to create responsible clothing.
What is the message you wanted to share with this collection?
Even if it’s an Autumn-Winter collection, I tried to communicate a positive message of holidays, sun and travel. As we are all kind of physically stuck in our own countries, cities, apartments, I think it’s important to make our mind travel a bit.
